The Charyn Canyon is an extraordinary natural landmark in Kazakhstan, capable of impressing anyone who visits it. A similar type of natural landscape can only be found in North America. That is why the Charyn Canyon immediately attracts the attention of tourists visiting Almaty. In honor of the 20th anniversary of the capital, a special area inspired by the Charyn Canyon was also created in Zhetysu Park, a gift from the Almaty region. This site is included in the list of 100 sacred places of national significance in Kazakhstan.
The Charyn Canyon is located approximately 195 kilometers from Almaty and about 180 kilometers from the Talgat district. The Charyn River flows along the bottom of the canyon and is considered one of the largest river valleys in the region. According to scientists, this unique natural formation was created around 30 million years ago. In some places, the canyon walls reach a height of 150-300 meters.
One of the most popular tourist attractions is the “Valley of Castles”. It is about 2 kilometers long and 20-80 meters wide. The shapes of the rock formations resemble massive castles and towers, which is why locals call it the “Valley of Fortified Castles.” Many people compare the Charyn Canyon to a smaller version of the famous Grand Canyon in the United States.
Ancient rock carvings made by early humans can also be found in the canyon area. The depictions of wild animals and birds suggest that this region was inhabited by diverse fauna during the Paleolithic era.
Charyn is one of the most picturesque tourist destinations in the country. Towering rock formations reaching toward the sky resemble a fairy-tale city. These naturally sculpted stone structures look like palaces, towers, and fortresses. As you move deeper into the canyon, you feel as if you are reaching the edge of the earth. Some of the landscapes resemble natural formations found in Australian national parks and the famous wave-like rocks of Arizona.
In the lower part of the Charyn Canyon, Indian barberry and turanga trees grow. In autumn, the valley turns bright red, creating a particularly beautiful landscape. The small forest along the Charyn River is also a unique natural heritage site. Such ecosystems are extremely rare in the world and can only be compared to similar forests in North America. About 1,500 plant species grow in this area. In 2005, the canyon and the ash forest were placed under state protection and designated as a specially protected natural area. In addition, fossil remains of ancient animals such as elephants, mastodons, rhinoceroses, and stenon horses have been discovered here. All of this gives the Charyn National Natural Park significant scientific and educational value. Today, the park plays an important role in developing ecological tourism, promoting environmental protection culture, and educating the younger generation about ecology. Therefore, Charyn can truly be called a priceless gift of nature to humanity.
