Kassym-Jomart Tokayev congratulates Kazakhstanis on Republic Day.
"I congratulate you on the main holiday of our country - Republic Day! This is the day of revival of our centuries-old statehood, originating from the era of the Turkic Khaganates, the Golden Horde and the Kazakh Khanate. On this day the idea of freedom for which Alash leaders fought was realised. It is not by no coincidence that without sovereignty there is no country. 33 years ago, with the adoption of the Declaration of State Sovereignty, historical justice triumphed. This most important document opened the way for Kazakhstan's Independence," the President said.
On 25 October 1990, the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic was adopted. This document, which initiated the establishment of Kazakhstan as a sovereign country, for the first time prescribed such important state principles as the integrity of the country's territory, the revival of culture, traditions and language of the Kazakh people and other nationalities, and the formation and strengthening of national identity.
The declaration enshrined the political and legal foundations of Kazakhstan as an independent state; the Kaz SSR was endowed with the right to establish its own troops, state security and internal affairs bodies. Since then, Republic Day has been celebrated annually. On 18 October 1995 the memorable date was given the status of a bank holiday, in 2001 it was renamed a public holiday. Since April 2009, it has been excluded from the list of holidays altogether.
In 2022, on the proposal of President Kasym-Jomart Tokayev, Republic Day on 25 October again became a bank holiday. Thus, amendments were made to the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan "On Holidays". 25 October - Republic Day was declared a bank holiday, and 16 December - Independence Day - a public holiday. In honour of the holiday, more than 200 festive events will be held in Astana this year. Among them are festive concerts, car rallies, exhibitions, excursions to places of interest for children, round tables, holding tournaments on national sports, distribution of food baskets to low-income groups of population.
