KAZAKHSTAN INTENDS TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE OF TRANSBOUNDARY RIVER WATER USE

12 February, 2024

Within the framework of the Convention on the Law of the Non-navigational Uses of International Watercourses, the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan intends to address the issue of sharing the waters of transboundary rivers. Kazakhstan joined the Convention in 2024.

The Convention is an international document that ensures equitable distribution of water in transboundary rivers and regulates its use.

The international agreement creates mechanisms to resolve possible disputes on water allocation and interstate cooperation for the development of water resources, taking into account the interests of all parties.

According to the Convention, when using an international watercourse on their territory, watercourse countries take measures to prevent harm to other states. The parties also regularly share available data on the watercourse, water quality and relevant forecasts. In addition, the watercourse countries consult with each other and negotiate on the possible effects of planned activities on the international watercourse.
