Writer Mukhtar Magauin has passed away

Kazakh National Writer, historian, Doctor of Philology, publicist, and researcher of Kazakh oral literature, Mukhtar Magauin, has passed away, reports Egemen.kz.

The writer's son, Edige Magauin, shared the news on his Facebook page.

"My lion-hearted father has departed this world for eternity. He passed away on January 9, 2025, at 7:55 PM local time (January 10 at 5:55 AM Kazakhstan time) in his home in Maryland, USA, surrounded by his family," he wrote.

Mukhtar Magauin was a renowned Kazakh historian, writer, and researcher of Kazakh oral traditions. He held a Doctorate in Philology, was a laureate of the State Prize of the Kazakh SSR (1984), and was honored with the title of National Writer of Kazakhstan (1996).

Mukhtar Mukhanuly Magauin was born on February 2, 1940, in the Shubartau district of the former Semipalatinsk region. He graduated from the Faculty of Philology at Kazakh State University in 1962 and completed his postgraduate studies in 1965.

He worked as the head of a department at the Kazakh Adebieti newspaper, deputy editor-in-chief at the Zhazushy publishing house, and senior researcher at the M. Auezov Institute of Literature and Art under the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR.

At the Maxim Gorky Literary Institute in Moscow, he lectured on the history of Kazakh literature and folklore.

From 1984 to 1986, he served as the editor-in-chief of the Zhazushy publishing house, and from 1988 to 2006, he was the editor-in-chief of the Zhuldyz magazine.

His first publications appeared in print in 1959. By the 1960s, he had gained recognition as a literary scholar. His works were translated into Russian and other languages. He earned the title of Candidate of Philological Sciences (1967) and held the position of Secretary of the Board of the Writers' Union of Kazakhstan.

He was awarded the Abai State Prize of the Kazakh SSR for his historical novel-duology Alasapyran. Additionally, he received Turkey's international "For Service to the Turkic World" award (1997), the "Tarlan" prize (2002), and the title of Honorary Writer of Kazakhstan (2019).

In December 2006, Mukhtar Magauin relocated from Kazakhstan to the Czech Republic. Since then, he had lived and worked in the Czech Republic, the United States, and Turkey, dedicating himself to creative and scholarly pursuits.

Available records and recollections from contemporaries confirm that Mukhtar Magauin was one of the most significant figures in the history of Kazakh literature and culture.
