Kazakhstan has received the most powerful supercomputer in Central Asia, marking a historic milestone for the region. With a performance capacity of approximately 2 exaflops, this is the first supercomputing cluster ever deployed in Central Asia. The system is built on cutting-edge NVIDIA H200 graphical processing units, specifically designed for artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) applications.
The installation and commissioning of the supercomputer will take place at the new Tier III-level data center of the Ministry of Digital Development, Innovations and Aerospace Industry of the Republic of Kazakhstan (MDDIAI), ensuring stable and uninterrupted operation. This launch represents a key step in the implementation of the President’s Address, aimed at building a national digital infrastructure and fostering the development of Kazakhstan’s AI ecosystem.
The initiative is designed not solely for a limited circle of experts, but to support the growth of the entire digital ecosystem of the country. These computational capabilities are already being applied across various sectors, including healthcare, energy, education, and public services.
Crucially, access to the supercomputer’s resources will be open to all. Startups requiring computational power for neural network training, universities conducting fundamental and applied research, as well as research centers and businesses integrating AI into their operations, will be able to utilize its capabilities.
The delivery of this supercomputer marks a pivotal moment in the development of Kazakhstan’s high-performance computing ecosystem. Notably, this shipment also introduced a new mechanism for importing high-tech equipment into the country without customs duties and VAT — a significant step that enhances Kazakhstan’s appeal to international IT companies and data center operators.
It is worth recalling that during the official visit of His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, the overseas office of Presight (G42) was officially inaugurated in Astana. During the visit, an agreement was signed between the Ministry of Digital Development, Innovations and Aerospace Industry of the Republic of Kazakhstan and Presight to establish a supercomputing cluster in Kazakhstan.
"This is a strategically important step in building the country’s digital infrastructure. It will strengthen Kazakhstan’s digital sovereignty and reinforce our leading position in the region in AI development and the attraction of global IT players," said Zhaslan Madiyev, Minister of Digital Development, Innovations and Aerospace Industry of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The project represents a key component of the practical implementation of the Artificial Intelligence Development Concept through 2029 and constitutes one of the cornerstone phases in the formation of a modern IT infrastructure in Kazakhstan.
