A working meeting was held between representatives of the Republican State Enterprise "KazStandard", led by Deputy Director General Zhazira Shuykebayeva, and Sally Swingewood, Head of the Technical Programme at the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
During the meeting, the parties discussed matters related to the operations of international ISO Technical Committees (ISO/TC), including the planning, development, revision, and implementation processes of international standards. Particular attention was given to the analysis of standard overlaps and the marketing strategy for promoting standards in the global marketplace.
The KazStandard delegation also expressed Kazakhstan’s intention to strengthen its participation in ISO’s practical activities, specifically through involvement in the Technical Management Board (TMB), which coordinates all ISO/TC operations and standards development processes.
Sally Swingewood, who heads the ISO/TC 34/SC 6 "Meat, poultry, fish, eggs and their products", provided an in-depth overview of the committee’s activities, highlighting the growing role of Kazakhstan as a valued partner.
"We are seeing tangible progress in Kazakhstan’s engagement in international standardization and are confident that joint management of technical committees will open new opportunities for the country’s active participation in global sustainable development initiatives," noted Sally Swingewood.
As a reminder, on October 9, 2024, KazStandard signed an agreement with the Standardization Administration of China for the joint management of two technical committees: ISO/TC 34/SC 6 "Meat, poultry, fish, eggs and their products" and ISO/TC 135/SC 9 "Acoustic emission testing". This represents Kazakhstan’s first experience of such a high-level collaboration and is viewed as a significant step towards enhancing the country’s international presence in the field of standardization.
The meeting concluded with an agreement to further develop cooperation, including through joint projects aimed at achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as nominating a representative from Kazakhstan to join the ISO Technical Management Board.
This initiative will enable Kazakhstan to gain comprehensive insights into ISO practices and the expertise of leading international peers in effective committee management and standard development, while also safeguarding Kazakhstan’s interests in the global standardization arena.
