1. GLACIERS OF THE ZAILIYSKIY ALATAU

The vast majority of glaciers in Kazakhstan are located in the Zailiyskiy Alatau. There are a total of 470 glaciers with a total area of 140,732 square kilometres.

Glaciers influence the condition of rivers near the city of Almaty, so they are very important for the ecology of the region. Also, the glaciers of the Zailiyskiy Alatau are a popular tourist destination for mountaineers and travellers.

2. CONSTITUTION GLACIER

Constitution Glacier is located in the south-east of Kazakhstan, in the Zhetysu Alatau (or eastern part of the Tien Shan). The height of its peak is more than 4500 metres.

The glacier was named in 1993 in honour of the adoption of the Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The glacier is a source of water for the rivers of the region and has a great impact on the environment. In addition, the object is located on the territory of a nature reserve, where rare species of plants and animals live.

3. GLACIER OF THE MINING INSTITUTE

The Mountain Institute Glacier is located on the northern slope of the Zailiyskiy Alatau, east of the city of Almaty. The glacier is named in honour of the Mountain Institute of Almaty, whose employees were engaged in its study. It is the largest glacier in the Turgen River basin. Its area is about 3.786 square kilometres.

The glacier of the Mining Institute is an important natural area for climatic and geographical studies. Its size and condition influence the ecosystem of the region and the formation of local rivers.

4. SHOKALSKY GLACIER

Shokalsky Glacier is the longest glacier in the Talgar River basin. Its length is 3.52 kilometres. The glacier is named in honour of the famous geographer and mountaineer Pyotr Shokalskiy, who studied the mountains and glaciers of Central Asia.

The Shokalsky Glacier is a source of water for the rivers flowing through the Zailiysky Alatau. The site is also very important for climate studies, as the climate indicators of the region are determined by the melting and change of the glacier.

5. BIG BEREL GLACIER

Big Berel glacier is located in Katon-Karagai district of East Kazakhstan region. It is one of the largest glaciers in the region, its area is 4.7 square kilometres. The glacier is of great ecological and hydrological importance, as it is a source of water for several rivers and other water bodies.

Due to its size and geographical location, the Big Berel glacier has become an object of scientific research. In addition, it is close to the Berel barrow, where burials of Scythian rulers and other archaeological monuments were discovered. Therefore, the glacier is very interesting not only for mountaineers, but also for tourists and archaeologists.
