27 February, 2024

In Mangystau, Deputy Prime Minister Serik Zhumangarin held a meeting on the development of the North-South and TMTM transport corridors.

The North-South corridor, within which the transportation of goods between the port of Aktau and the northern ports of Iran is established, is a very promising direction in the light of the development of alternative trade routes. The Eastern branch of the North-South corridor runs through the Mangystau region. As Vice Minister of Transport Maksat Kaliakparov informed at the meeting, in order to improve service, reduce cargo delivery time and provide services on the “single window” principle in this transport corridor, the railway administrations of Kazakhstan, the Russian Federation and Turkmenistan are planning to create a joint venture.

“At the end of 2023, the volume of cargo transported by rail along the North-South corridor amounted to 2.1 million tons, which is 4% more than the previous year. By 2027, the transport potential of the corridor will be increased from 6 to 10 million tons per year,” said Maksat Kaliakparov.

The Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR) is a serious alternative to routes in the East-West direction. Its throughput capacity is 6 million tons; in 2023, the volume of transportation amounted to 2.76 million tons of cargo, which is 65% higher than in 2022. At the end of the first month of 2024, transportation amounted to 274.2 thousand tons, an increase of 147% compared to last year. TMTM is carrying out large-scale work to improve infrastructure and terminal facilities, expand ports, increase rolling stock, remove administrative barriers and create favorable conditions for carriers. All this will allow increasing the throughput capacity of TMTM to 10 million tons per year by 2027. The largest works: construction of the second tracks of the Dostyk-Moyynty railway section and the Almaty bypass railway line, a container hub in the seaport of Aktau, the Sarzha multifunctional terminal in the port of Kuryk, dredging of both ports.

Also, Vice Minister of Transport Maksat Kaliakparov informed about the ongoing work in the field of air and road transport in the Mangystau region. Following the meeting, Serik Zhumangarin emphasized the strategic role of the Mangystau region in the transport and logistics system of the country and in particular the North-South and TMTM corridors. He instructed to intensify the ongoing work to expand them and increase capacity.
