Get education in a foreign university without leaving Kazakhstan

30 January 2025

Today, in Karaganda, an exhibition on the branches of foreign universities was organized by Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Science and Higher Education and the Akimat of Karaganda Region as part of an informational campaign about international university branches.

The event was attended by the head of the Youth Policy Department of Karaganda Region, Nurzhan Ilyash, advisor to the Minister of Science and Higher Education, Ruslan Emelbaev, Deputy Director of the National Testing Center, Nauzhan Didarbeova, career counsellor Bakhytjan Jumashyev, and university representatives, who shared important information with graduates.

“This exhibition is a significant event in the field of education. It showcases the branches of foreign universities that have been opening in Kazakhstan in recent years. From 2022 to 2024, strategic partnerships have been established with 23 foreign universities, and this year negotiations are underway with 11 more partners. This presents a great opportunity for Kazakhstani applicants—our graduates can earn an internationally recognized degree while studying in Kazakhstan without leaving the country, based on a government scholarship,” noted Ruslan Emelbaev, advisor to the Minister of Science and Higher Education.

Foreign university branches are being opened in regions across Kazakhstan, taking into account the region's industrial potential and the demand for specific professions. The exhibition in Karaganda featured all the foreign university branches currently operating in Kazakhstan.

During the event, high school seniors and their parents learned about the foreign university branches operating in Kazakhstan, their admission requirements, and study programs.

The Scottish HERIOT WATT UNIVERSITY, which opened in 2022 at Zhubanov University in Aktobe, currently has around 600 students enrolled. The university’s high ranking and flexible admission conditions have attracted significant interest among youth.

“To apply to HERIOT WATT UNIVERSITY, results of the UNT (Unified National Testing) are considered, and instead of IELTS, university representatives conduct their own English language exams. This is a great opportunity for young people. We have all the necessary conditions, and there are no issues with accommodation. In addition to our Aktobe branch, HERIOT WATT UNIVERSITY has branches in Malaysia, Dubai, and Edinburgh, where our students can receive education and exchange experiences,” said Askarbek Imansheev, a professor at the Mathematics Department of Zhubanov University.

Exhibition participants emphasized the importance of such events.

“Such exhibitions are very important because often we are unaware of available opportunities. More events like this should be held. I received a lot of useful information, including the possibility of earning a dual degree while staying in Kazakhstan. For my chosen field, physics and mathematics, I learned a great deal and now I’m considering which university to choose. This exhibition was extremely beneficial for me,” shared applicant Anar Alzhappar.

The exhibition, which started today in Karaganda, will last for 15 days and will also be held in Astana, Almaty, Taraz, Shymkent, Turkestan, and Kyzylorda. This is the first stage, with similar exhibitions planned for other regions later.
