On April 8, the International Workshop on the creation of sources of ultracold (UCN) and very cold neutrons, as well as their use on the basis of the VVR-K research reactor, started. The seminar is attended by 30 scientists and international experts from leading nuclear centers in South and North America, Europe and Asia.
The organizer of this event is the Institute of Nuclear Physics. During the four-day Workshop, international experts will share their experience, it is planned to discuss ideas and problems in the development of UCN and VCN sources and their application in present and future experiments, as well as establish international cooperation with other international organizations. As noted, the organizers of the event, the development of this neutron source to create UCN and VCN sources will allow Kazakhstan to become the epicenter of world science.
The work of the International Seminar was opened by the Director General of the Institute, Sayabek Sakhiev, emphasizing that the Institute of Nuclear Physics has a bold initiative to create a mega-science project to achieve a high-intensity flux of ultracold neutrons. As preliminary calculations by specialists have shown, it is assumed that this UCN project, along with the source of the highest intensity neutrons in the world, may become the first mega-science class installation in Kazakhstan.
Let us note that at present, at the VVR-K research reactor at the Institute of Nuclear Physics, scientists are conducting scientific work on the development and creation of a high-intensity source of UCN and VCN.
More than 20 leading scientists in the world have been designing a UCN source based on a research reactor for more than 2.5 years. The development of this neutron source in the VVR-K research reactor can open up new physics and new natural phenomena in the future. The Workshop will last until April 11.
