Kazakhstan-UK: cooperation in the field of education

25 April, 2024

As part of the official visit of British Foreign Secretary David Cameron to Astana, memorandums were signed aimed at studying the Kazakh language and opening branches of British universities in Kazakhstan.

Among the key agreements is a memorandum on the launch of a program for studying the Kazakh language at the University of Oxford, concluded between the Institute of Linguistics named after A. Baitursynov, the National Scientific and Practical Center “Til Qazyna” named after Sh. Shayakhmetov, JSC Center for International Programs and the University of Oxford. The program includes collaboration with various colleges and departments through the Oxford Birsöz Initiative CIC.

In addition, an agreement was reached between Narxoz University and Queen's University Belfast to open a branch. In January 2024, both parties formalized the partnership by signing a memorandum of understanding, which provides for dual degree programs at Queen's Business School. Narxoz students can obtain bachelor's degrees in business management, business economics and finance under the 2+2 and 2+3 schemes.

In addition, a memorandum was signed between Coventry University and the University of Astana, providing for the opening of a branch “Coventry University Kazakhstan”. This branch plans to introduce a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs in a phased manner.

In January of this year, the Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan Sayasat Nurbek held negotiations in the UK on the implementation of the above memorandums and presented the first edition of the Oxford Qazaq Dictionary, developed on behalf of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
