At the age of 82, the Kazakh public figure, famous orientalist, Turkologist, culturologist, essayist, and diplomat Murat Mukhtarovich Auezov died. Education and beginning of a career path
Murat Auezov was born on January 1, 1943 in the village of Merke, Zhambyl region. His father is an outstanding writer of Kazakh literature, playwright, scientist and author of the first Kazakh epic novel “The Path of Abai” Mukhtar Auezov.
In 1965, he graduated from the Institute of Oriental Languages at Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov with a degree in oriental philology. Also, Murat Auezov is a graduate student at the Institute of World Literature of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1966–1969) and a candidate of philological sciences (1969).
He began his work experience in 1965–1966 as a trainee researcher at the Institute of Asian and African Peoples of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
From 1970 to 1976, he led the work of the aesthetics group at the Institute of Philosophy and Law, which prepared the collective monograph “Aesthetics of Nomadism” (1975), (1969-1977).
Over the years he worked as a literary consultant for the Writers' Union of Kazakhstan (1977-1980), head of a department of the Central Council of the Society for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments of the Kazakh SSR (1980-1982), editor-in-chief and artistic director of the Kazakhfilm film studio (1982-1988) and chairman of the Main Editorial Board on Literary Translation and Literary Relations at the Writers' Union of Kazakhstan (1988-1989).
From 1992 to 1995, Murat Auezov worked as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the People's Republic of China.
For the next 3 years he worked as the head of the department of history and theory of culture of the Scientific Center for Cultural Problems and as the artistic director of the TV and radio company “Mir” in Kazakhstan. In 1998, he was the head of the Almaty Regional Department of Information and Public Consent.
Then he became a leading researcher at the Mukhtar Auezov House-Museum, executive director and President of the Soros Foundation-Kazakhstan (1999–2003).
From 2003 to 2007, he held the position of General Director of the National Library of the Republic of Kazakhstan. And after that he was President of the Mukhtar Auezov Foundation.
Nevada-Semipalatinsk and other public work
In 1989, 35 years ago, the Nevada-Semey International Anti-Nuclear Movement was formed, which united the intelligentsia in the fight against nuclear weapons.
From 1989 to 1990, Murat Auezov was the vice-president of this large-scale movement in every sense. In 1989, traffic was stopped by 11 explosions at the Semipalatinsk test site, out of a planned 18. Only 7 were carried out, the last explosion took place on October 19.
The program of the Nevada-Semipalatinsk movement resulted in the program of the international anti-nuclear alliance. The Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty was adopted. Most countries put their signatures on it.
Before that, he was one of the founders and leaders of the informal youth movement “Zhas Tulpar” (1963–1969). He was also one of the founders of the Public Fund “Public Protection” (2001), and since 2005 he chaired the “Forum of Almaty Cultural Scientists”.
He was a member of the Creative Unions of Writers and Cinematographers, the Pen Club of Kazakhstan, the National Council under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Public Council of the State Program “Cultural Heritage”, the National Commission of the Republic of Kazakhstan for UNESCO, and the non-governmental organization “Conversations on the Silk Road”.
Moreover, since 1990 - deputy of the Supreme Council of the Kazakh SSR, member of the Committee on National Policy, Development of Culture and Language. In the next 2 years, he was Chairman of the Committee of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Kazakhstan on Foreign Relations and Inter-Parliamentary Relations.Since 1999, he has been a candidate for deputy of the Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan of the second convocation, and since 2007, Murat Auezov has been a member of the council of the Public Chamber under the Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Murat Auezov is also the owner of the Order “Kurmet” (2006), the Medal “Kazakhstan Constitution of 10 years” (2005), the UNESCO bronze medal for his contribution to the study and revival of the Great Silk Road and had the honorary title “Kazakhstan Republic of Kairatkeri” (2001).
Winner of the “Tarlan” award, established by the Club of Patrons of Kazakhstan in the category “For contribution to the field of education” (2003), the “Altyn Asyk” award, a special award of the festival-competition “Altyn Adam-Person of the Year” (2005), award in the category “Intellectuals for the Intelligentsia”, established by the “Golden Age” Association and the editors of the magazine “Tamyr” (2005), the Academy of Journalism of Kazakhstan “Altyn Zhuldyz-2005” award in the category “Best Author’s Program” (2005).
In 2005, he also received gratitude for his contribution to the study and conservation, restoration and museumification of historical and cultural monuments of the Republic of Kazakhstan and in connection with the awarding of the Research and Design Institute of Monuments of Material Culture with the Gold Medal of the International Foundation “For High Quality in Business Practice.”
In addition to all this, Murat Auezov is the author of over 200 publications on the theory and practice of the artistic process. Author of the monographs: “The Connecting Thread of Time” (Almaty, 1972), “Hippocrene. Walking to the Wells of Time" (Almaty, 1997), and one of the compilers of "Leaving to Return" (Almaty, 2002).
