07 August, 2024

Archaeological work organized by the State Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve "Berel" has begun in the Katon-Karagay and Ulken Naryn districts of the East Kazakhstan region. Scientists, students and scientific advisers from universities of Kazakhstan are participating in the project.

As part of the project "Historical and Cultural Heritage of the Ancient and Middle Ages of the Kazakh Altai", archaeologists are conducting extensive research and have already discovered about 20 previously unknown monuments, including burials, settlements, outposts and wintering places of the Kazakhs.

To date, excavations have been carried out on 14 monuments dating back to various eras: from the Bronze Age to the ethnographic present. Among the finds are an early Iron Age settlement with a metallurgical point, a Kazakh wintering place from the late 19th - early 20th centuries and 12 burials. Archaeologists also discovered various artifacts, such as items of early Saka and ancient Turkic horse equipment, ceramic dishes, Pazyryk culture jewelry, a belt buckle from the ancient Turkic period, bronze plates from the Kimak period and coins.

In addition to excavations, work is underway with local residents and authorities to protect and popularize the historical and cultural heritage of the region. Archaeological research will continue until the end of 2024.
