Kazakhstan Improves Its Position in the Global Internet Speed Ranking

20 February 2025

Analytical company Ookla has published an updated internet speed ranking for January 2025, showing a significant improvement in Kazakhstan’s performance. In the mobile internet category, Kazakhstan rose by 8 positions, securing the 49th place. The average download speed reached 81.58 Mbps, upload speed was 18.42 Mbps, and latency stood at 18 ms.

In the fixed broadband internet segment, Kazakhstan improved by 5 positions, ranking 83rd with an average download speed of 77.93 Mbps, upload speed of 80.83 Mbps, and latency of 5 ms.

This progress has been made possible through the implementation of government programs and efforts by telecom operators to develop telecommunications infrastructure. In 2024, fixed communication networks were modernized, 4G coverage was expanded, and the introduction of 5G in major cities began. These advancements significantly boosted internet speeds, strengthening Kazakhstan’s position in the global ranking.

As part of the national project "Accessible Internet" for 2025–2027, the following initiatives are planned:

  • Implementation of the "Broadband Access for Rural Settlements via Fiber-Optic Lines" project, covering 3,010 villages
  • Subsidization of the "last mile" internet connection for 1,120 rural settlements
  • Further expansion of 5G in cities of national significance and regional centers
  • Launch of satellite-based internet for over 250 remote and sparsely populated areas

The increase in internet speed plays a crucial role in Kazakhstan’s digital transformation, the development of the IT sector, online education, e-commerce, and other key economic areas. Telecommunications development remains one of the top priorities for the Ministry, which will continue efforts to enhance connectivity and internet access across the country.
