Today is the Day of Languages of the People of Kazakhstan. “Language is the most powerful thing that causes both the preservation of a nation and its loss,” said people’s educator Akhmet Baitursynuly.
Why did the holiday date change?
On September 22, 1989, the Law “On Languages” was adopted. The holiday has been celebrated since 1998. September 22 of the same year was declared the Day of Languages of the People of Kazakhstan.
However, twenty years later, the said date was changed. In the fall of 2017, by a government decree, the Day of Languages was moved to September 5. It was on September 5 that Akhmet Baitursynuly, a respected member of Alash, a teacher of the nation, who fought for the fate and language of the Kazakh people, was born. That is why, starting in 2018, the date of Language Day has changed and is now celebrated on September 5.Representatives of more than 130 nationalities live peacefully in our country. The share of Kazakhs, the titular nationality of the state, exceeds 70%. In Kazakhstan, the Assembly has given representatives of more than 100 nationalities the opportunity to develop their languages. More than 10 ethnic groups have schools with instruction in their native language and centers of cultural and spiritual support for them.
The state of the Kazakh language
The state is creating conditions for expanding the space for using the Kazakh language. The number of people studying the Kazakh language is increasing every year, among them there are representatives of other nationalities.
There are 111 state centers in the republic where adults study the Kazakh language for free.
For independent study of the Kazakh language, there are applications: Tilqural.kz, Abai.institute, Tilmedia.kz, Balatili.kz, Soyle.kz, Bala.soyle.kz, Qazonline, Ana tili, the competitions "State Language and Mass Media", "Master of Language", "State Language - Symbol of Independence", the campaign "I Speak Kazakh" and other republican competitions are held annually to increase the language culture.
"Another symbol that unites the people of Kazakhstan is the state language. The Kazakh language will forever remain the state language. The duty of the state is to expand the scope of the Kazakh language. This work will not stop, it will continue," said President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. The head of state also emphasized that we should not put pressure on our compatriots who do not speak the state language. The President believes that the Kazakh language should become a tool that opens the way to scientific progress and advanced achievements in education.
