Prevention of youth crime discussed at meeting with UN representatives

01 November, 2024

The Ministry of Culture and Information held a meeting with the Director of the Regional Office of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime for Central Asia, Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan (UNODC). The parties discussed potential cooperation in the field of youth crime prevention and healthy lifestyle promotion.
Vice Minister of Culture and Information Yevgeny Kochetov emphasized that the above-mentioned areas are among the key ones on the agenda. He said that the Youth Policy Council under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan is successfully functioning in Kazakhstan, and the Concept of the State Youth Policy for 2023-2029 is being implemented. Comprehensive interdepartmental work is also underway.

"Under the auspices of the Youth Policy Council under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, comprehensive plans have been developed to combat drug addiction and drug trafficking, as well as to combat illegal gambling and ludomania.
In general, all our work is based on the principle of working "with youth", and not "for youth". That is, it is the youth themselves who determine the priorities for work and the problematic issues that require solutions,” noted Evgeniy Kochetov.
In turn, the director of the UNODC regional office, Oliver Stolpe, presented courses aimed at working with youth. One of them is the “Join Life” program for educational institutions, which helps young people acquire useful physical and psychological skills through sports. Oliver Stolpe also proposed holding an extended briefing, where experts would talk in more detail about the initiatives and results of the department’s work.
