The Kazakh full-length film "Bauyrina Salu" by Askhat Kuchincherekov has been selected for the 2025 Oscars in the category "Best Foreign Language Film", the film's Instagram page reported.
"Bauyrina Salu" is Kuchincherekov's debut film. The film tells the story of a boy who was raised by his grandmother according to the tradition of bauyrina salu all his life, but after her death, he has to return to his biological parents, who are already strangers to him.
The film won in several nominations at international festivals in Austria, Baku, San Sebastian, as well as at the Asia-Pacific Film Awards (APSA).
"Bauyrina Salu" was nominated by Kazakhstan, as the film won in the category "Best Film" at the Kazakh film award "Tulpar". The winners of this nomination are nominated for the Oscar in the International Feature Film category, but the final decision is made by the Oscar Committee under the Union of Cinematographers.
The film was released in Kazakhstan in July 2024. The film will also be shown to foreign viewers. The rights to the international distribution of the film were bought by the American company Willa.
