President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev held a meeting with Kazakh wrestler Ersin Baltagul, who has achieved significant success in Japan, the homeland of sumo.

The President congratulated the athlete on earning the rank of Maegashira, which is a high rank in professional sumo, at the 2025 Emperor’s Cup. He also recognised the athlete for receiving the special Kanto-sho (Fighting Spirit) prize based on the competition results. The Head of State described this award as a result of the wrestler's persistence and hard work.

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev emphasized that the number of young compatriots successfully representing the country abroad is growing today. According to him, the state places special priority on supporting talent and creating conditions for athletic development.

"During my visit to Japan, I noticed that you are known and respected by many: from the Emperor to the common people. This is a great honor. By living in Japan, you bring glory to the Kazakh people and strengthen the prestige of our country. I express my sincere gratitude to you," the Head of State noted.

In turn, Ersin Baltagul thanked the President for his support and shared his plans to meet with young athletes.

"As a citizen of Kazakhstan, I set a goal for myself: to worthily represent the turquoise flag of our country in Japan, a nation of over 120 million people. I am doing everything to achieve this goal. I would also like to sincerely congratulate you and all Kazakhstanis on the outstanding achievement of our compatriot Mikhail Shaidorov, who won the gold medal at the Winter Olympic Games in Italy," said Ersin Baltagul.

In conclusion, the President wished the wrestler continued success in international competitions, noting that such results contribute to the country's prestige and the further strengthening of the bonds of friendship between Kazakhstan and Japan.

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev awarded Ersin Baltagul the Order of Barys, 2nd Class for his outstanding athletic achievements.
