At the 25th Winter Olympic Games in Italy, the medalists in the men’s single skating event have been determined. World Championship silver medalist Mikhail Shaidorov earned a record 198.64 points in the free program and secured the gold medal.
During the competition, Shaidorov performed five quadruple jumps cleanly for the first time in his career.
Final results of the tournament (24 participants): 1st place: Mikhail Shaidorov (Kazakhstan) with 291.58 points, 2nd place: Yuma Kagiyama (Japan) with 280.06 points, 3rd place: Shun Sato (Japan) with 274.90 points
This victory marks a historic moment for the country, as Kazakhstan has earned two Olympic medals in a single sport for the first time in the Winter Games. Previously, Denis Ten won a bronze medal in figure skating at the Sochi 2014 Olympics.
It is noteworthy that the last time Kazakhstan won a gold medal at the Winter Olympics was in 1994, when Vladimir Smirnov became the champion.
The Minister of Tourism and Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Yerbol Myrzabossynov, congratulated Mikhail Shaidorov on this historic achievement:
