The talks between Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Masoud Pezeshkian continued in an expanded format with the participation of delegations from both countries.
The Head of State expressed Kazakhstan’s interest in strengthening cooperation with Iran as an important and reliable partner in the Caspian region.
“Over more than 33 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, our countries have achieved significant results in interstate cooperation. We have built a constructive political dialogue, established effective operation of the Intergovernmental Economic Commission, and are actively developing inter-parliamentary ties. A comprehensive legal and contractual framework has been formed, with more than fifty agreements concluded. Cooperation within international organisations is expanding. All of this clearly demonstrates the traditional friendship and partnership between our countries,” the President said.
According to Masoud Pezeshkian, Iranian–Kazakh relations have deep historical roots.
“Contacts between our countries date back to the era of the Great Silk Road. Even before Kazakhstan gained independence, our ties were not interrupted. Cooperation with your country is of great importance to us. Intergovernmental and inter-agency cooperation has been established. Our positions on many international and regional issues coincide. We work closely within the framework of the Eurasian Economic Union, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. Our common task is to intensify this work. To date, bilateral trade turnover has increased by 40 per cent. This is a very good indicator. Previously, we agreed to increase mutual trade to USD 3 billion, and we will make every effort to achieve this goal. A solid foundation for expanding trade and economic ties is provided by the Free Trade Agreement between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Eurasian Economic Union,” the President of Iran noted.
During the talks, the parties discussed prospects for expanding cooperation in the trade, economic and investment spheres.
“The volume of mutual trade is growing year by year; however, we need to pay particular attention to diversifying trade. In particular, cooperation should be intensified in agriculture, transport and logistics, the mining industry, healthcare and advanced technologies. I am confident that the documents signed today will provide a powerful impetus for the further development of political and economic cooperation,” the Head of State said.
According to the President, Kazakhstan is ready to supply goods to Iran worth at least USD 200 million. Kassym-Jomart Tokayev also supported the initiative to establish a Kazakhstan Trade House in Tehran, emphasising the importance of intensifying the activities of the Business Council and making the most effective use of the potential of the Kazakh–Iranian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Since the beginning of the year, Iran has invested USD 17.8 million in direct investment in Kazakhstan’s economy. Iranian entrepreneurs are actively involved in the implementation of projects such as the launch of a cheese production plant in the Almaty Region and a hide-processing facility in the West Kazakhstan Region. In turn, Kazakh businesses are also implementing a number of projects in the Iranian market.
The parties confirmed their mutual interest in further enhancing the potential of the North–South transport corridor and the Kazakhstan–Turkmenistan–Iran railway route.
Over the past ten months, freight volumes along these routes have increased by 53 per cent compared with the same period last year. The Presidents discussed prospects for further diversification of transport and transit routes in order to strengthen interregional links, including the joint development of port infrastructure in the Caspian Sea.
In addition, the talks addressed prospects for implementing joint projects in agriculture, energy, mining, as well as in the fields of digitalisation and artificial intelligence.
The heads of state paid particular attention to intensifying cultural and humanitarian ties.
“A significant number of artefacts of Kazakh history are preserved in Iran’s archives. Our scholars have already begun joint research into the legacy of Al-Farabi. The issue of constructing a historical and cultural complex on Kazakh soil dedicated to the great thinker is being considered. Today, the Iranian delegation handed over copies of valuable ancient manuscripts related to the history of Kazakhstan, for which I am sincerely grateful. This gesture underscores the depth of the historical ties between our two peoples,” Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stated.
In order to promote mutual understanding of the spiritual and cultural values of the two countries, the parties agreed to hold Days of Culture in the coming years, expand student exchange programmes between higher education institutions, and establish cooperation between medical organisations and pharmaceutical manufacturers.
Following today’s talks, Presidents Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Masoud Pezeshkian adopted a Joint Statement.
