De Montfort University Kazakhstan Holds Its First Graduation Ceremony

29 September 2025

The first British university in Kazakhstan – De Montfort University Kazakhstan (DMUK) – hosted its inaugural graduation ceremony. The festive event took place today in Almaty.

This milestone marks a significant achievement that underscores the university’s academic excellence. Established in 2021, DMUK has rapidly evolved into a prestigious higher education institution meeting international standards and has now celebrated the graduation of its first 200 students from the Faculty and the Global MBA program. Notably, 90% of graduates received honours degrees (First Class and Upper Second Class – 2:1), clearly demonstrating the high standards of British education.

The ceremony was attended by distinguished guests, including Sayasat Nurbek, Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Kazakhstan, Kathy Leach.

In his congratulatory remarks, Minister Sayasat Nurbek stated:

“In recent years, Kazakhstan has achieved significant progress in the field of higher education. Today, our country has not only integrated into the global academic space but has also become an educational hub of Central Asia. One of the key steps on this path has been the opening of branches of leading international universities. The nationwide program to establish 40 strategic campuses is underway. The graduation of the first students of De Montfort University Kazakhstan is a vivid example of this progress and symbolizes a new stage in the development of education in Kazakhstan.”

DMUK Chief Executive Officer Hugh Martin Hegarty noted:

“Our university has quickly transformed from a bold idea into an international academic environment. Today, DMUK is a leading international higher education institution in Central Asia. Our first graduates are a shining testament to our ambition, resilience, and global vision.”

He also emphasized:

“Our modern Almaty campus offers students a comprehensive experience that combines academic rigor, innovation, and personal development. We are grateful to our partners for their support, which has been instrumental in shaping DMUK into a unique institution with international recognition.”

University President Sakina Safar highlighted:

“This ceremony is not only a celebration of our graduates’ success but also the realization of a bold idea. The core mission of DMUK is to bring world-class British education to Kazakhstan. Today, our university stands as an example of innovation, inclusivity, and international standards. We take pride in contributing to the country’s human capital development and to Kazakhstan’s aspiration to become a global academic center.”

The modern DMUK campus provides students not only with internationally recognised education but also with opportunities for personal growth, as well as the development of leadership and creative skills. The university’s partnerships with the business community open pathways for internships, participation in research projects, and successful entry into the labour market.

During the ceremony, special attention was also given to Almaty’s role as a centre of academic excellence and cultural life. DMUK actively contributes to the development of the city’s intellectual and cultural landscape.
