A new regional state nature park, «Merke», has been established in the Zhambyl Region, according to a resolution adopted by the regional Akimat. Covering 86,632 hectares in the foothills and mountains of the Western Tien Shan, the park has been designated as a specially protected natural area. Its primary goal is to safeguard unique ecosystems and biodiversity.
The «Merke» park is home to rare and endangered species listed in the Red Book of Kazakhstan, such as the snow leopard, argali, Indian porcupine, and Turkestan lynx.
The creation of the park became possible thanks to years of collaboration between government bodies, research institutions, local communities, and international partners, including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
“This is an important step towards effective management of natural resources and the conservation of ecosystems,” said Daniyar Turgambayev, Chairman of the Committee of Forestry and Wildlife of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources.
In addition to environmental protection, the park is expected to support the development of ecotourism, promote environmental education, and encourage public involvement in sustainable resource use. Future plans include building infrastructure, creating new jobs, and launching scientific and educational initiatives.
