Kazan, March 2, 2026 — The Consulate General of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Kazan organized a series of commemorative events to mark the 180th anniversary of the legendary Kazakh folk poet Zhambyl Zhabayev.

Supported by the Institute of Philology and Intercultural Communication of Kazan Federal University (KFU), a round table titled "Zhambyl Zhabayev: Poet and Citizen" was convened at the Abay Center for Kazakh Language and Culture. The event was attended by high-ranking officials and scholars, including Mr. Renat Valiullin, Head of the Executive Committee of the Assembly of Peoples of Tatarstan; Professor Radif Zamaletdinov, Director of the KFU Institute of Philology; Mr. Yerlan Iskakov, Consul General of Kazakhstan in Kazan; and Professor Rakhymzhan Turysbek of the L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, alongside other prominent academics and students.

Participants engaged in a profound discussion regarding the poet’s legacy and his transformative role in Kazakh literature. As a "Homer of the 20th Century," Zhambyl’s improvisational mastery promoted universal values of justice, patriotism, and the core philosophy of the Great Steppe. His works, which have been translated into numerous languages, continue to resonate globally. The event featured evocative recitations and musical performances of the poet’s works by university students.

The commemoration continued at the "MIR" cinema with a screening of the historical film "Zhambyl: A New Era." The cinematic piece portrays the poet’s spiritual resilience during World War II and his vital role in preserving the national identity and cultural spirit.

Additionally, a curated exhibition showcased rare literary collections in Tatar, Russian, and Latin scripts from the archives of leading libraries in Tatarstan. Guests were invited to experience Kazakh hospitality through traditional cuisine and a showcase of folk music.

The ceremonies were attended by heads of foreign consular missions, state and public figures, business leaders, media representatives, and members of the Kazakh diaspora.

It is worth noting that one of the streets in Kazan is named in honor of Zhambyl Zhabayev.
