Meeting with Representatives and Activists of the Kazakh Diaspora in Urumqi

26 August, 2024

Between August 24 and 30, 2024, at the invitation of the Association for External Relations of China’s Ethnic Minorities, D. Kadyrov, President of the Non-Profit Joint Stock Company Otandastar Qory, and K. Koblandin, Project Coordinator of the Department for Analysis and Strategic Development, paid a working visit to Beijing and Urumqi, the administrative center of the Xinjiang region.

As part of the visit, a meeting was held in Urumqi with representatives and activists of the Kazakh diaspora.

On August 26, the Kazakh delegation, which included D. Kadyrov, President of Otandastar Qory, K. Koblandin, Project Coordinator of the Department for Analysis and Strategic Development, and Ambassador of Kazakhstan Sh. Nuryshev, held a meeting with Pan Yue, Chairman of the State Committee for Ethnic Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, and Wei Guoxun, Head of the Committee’s Department for International Relations and Cooperation.

Pan Yue warmly welcomed the Kazakh delegation, expressing gratitude by recalling his visit to Kazakhstan the previous year and the meetings held during that time, and presented an overview of the activities of the State Committee for Ethnic Affairs.

On the same day, August 26, with the assistance of the Embassy, an informal meeting was held with prominent members of the Kazakh intelligentsia, including China’s National Writer Akbar Majit, veteran of the Nationalities Publishing House Aldekap, and Bakhytbek, an employee of the Literary Department of the Committee for Ethnic Affairs. During the meeting, information was shared about the activities of Otandastar Qory and migration-related issues. It was particularly emphasised that the organisation's work—especially its support for the enrollment of children from the Kazakh diaspora abroad—receives high praise. At the same time, certain difficulties were noted regarding travel and return from Xinjiang to Kazakhstan, as well as document processing. Akbar Majit shared positive impressions of the Otandastar Forum held in 2023 in Astana and his meetings with compatriots.

During the visit, the Chinese side was briefed on the objectives and tasks of Otandastar Qory, its key areas of activity, including promoting the cultural and spiritual values of the Kazakh community in China within Kazakhstan and fostering the strengthening of cultural and humanitarian ties between the two countries. It was noted that the work of Otandastar Qory is carried out openly and officially.
