Based on the Oxford Qazaq Dictionary, the Kazakh language will join the global linguistic community - the Oxford Global Languages platform, the most widespread and authoritative dictionary network in the world.
Acting President of Nazarbayev University (NU) Ilesanmi Adesida took part in the presentation of the dictionary developed by the International Society "Qazaq tili" on behalf of the President of Kazakhstan Kasym-Jomart Tokayev, Minister of Science and Higher Education Sayasat Nurbek, deputy of the Majilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan Isa Kazybek Zharylkasynuly, British Ambassador to Kazakhstan Kathy Leach and president of the international society "Qazaq tili" Rauan Kenzhekhanuly.
"What will be the future of language in the digital age and how can we preserve language? We have a vision now. Within the framework of the adopted seven-year vision of the Ministry, one of the important directions is the preservation of the Kazakh language through its systematisation in the digital world, because today the guarantee of language preservation lies in the creation of a single language corpus systematically codified on digital and virtual platforms. This dictionary is a contribution to the entry of the Kazakh language into the common global language corpus, uniting the vocabulary of 100 most important and basic languages of the world", - said the Minister of Science and Higher Education Sayasat Nurbek.
The dictionary takes into account the features of the modern lexicon of Kazakh and English languages, including news from the sphere of modern culture, information technologies, medicine, economics, finance and trade. The dictionary also contains brief instructions on the rules of English and Kazakh grammar, pronunciation and spelling, as well as examples of business and electronic correspondence in Kazakh.
More than 50 experienced linguists - specialists of the Akhmet Baitursynuly Institute of Linguistics worked on the publication of the dictionary, which received official permission from the world-famous Oxford University Press and was developed in accordance with the methodology and technology of Oxford English Dictionary for 4 years. The first edition of Oxford Qazaq Dictionary contains more than 60 thousand words and covers 1300 pages. The circulation of the dictionary is 10,000 copies.
"Oxford University Press has positioned itself as the world's most reliable dictionary publisher. They adhere to very high standards in their work and make the same demands of their partners. Therefore, extensive two-way work was carried out. After the dictionary was fully compiled, we sent it for expert review. Oxford University Publishing House has given official permission to publish a bilingual dictionary developed on the basis of Oxford English Dictionary methodology and technology", - said the head of the International Society "Qazaq tili" Rauan Kenzhekhanuly.
In the framework of the presentation, a number of employees of education, science and culture were awarded with a departmental award - a badge "Akhmet Baitursynuly" for their contribution to the development and popularisation of the Kazakh language.
It is important to note that in January in Oxford the presentation and signing of the agreement with Oxford University will take place.
