In the period from 22 to 28 June 2020, in connection with the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the XVII International Olympiad in the Kazakh language and literature "Kazakhstan - ata zhurtym, Kasietim - ana tilim" was held for the first time in the distance mode for children of the Kazakh diaspora living in the countries of near and far abroad.

The Olympiad is designed to identify the most talented schoolchildren who have shown deep knowledge of the Kazakh language and literature. Support and development of the cognitive interest of children and youth of the Kazakh diaspora in the study of the Kazakh language and literature, history and culture of the Kazakh people, assistance in strengthening friendly ties between representatives of the Kazakh diaspora living in different countries of the world and increasing the importance for them of knowing the Kazakh language.

The XVII International Olympiad in Kazakh Language and Literature set a record with the participation of 146 participants from all over the world (Russia, China, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Iran, Turkey and Belgium).

In accordance with the criteria of the Olympiad, the participants demonstrated their knowledge of the Kazakh language and literature, oratory and folklore.

The jury consisted of doctors and professors of the most famous universities in the country, such as the A. Baitursynov Institute of Linguistics, L.N. Gumilyov, Suleiman Demirel University, Nazarbayev University, Pavlodar State Pedagogical University, as well as representatives of the National Scientific and Practical Center "Til Kazyna", the national republican newspaper "Yegemen Kazakhstan" and the NJSC "Otandastar Kory".

The jury considered the written works of the participants sent by e-mail (writing essays on the given topics), as well as homework in the format of videos (singing, reading aloud, playing the dombra, dancing, etc.) and determined the winners and awardees for the awards.
